If you download a CDI or NRG image from DCEmulation, DCHomebrew, ConsoleVision, or anywhere else, you have two choices on what to do with those images, and quite a few methods through which to accomplish your goal.

Burn the Image to a Disc

Burn a CDI image with DiscJuggler

Download DiscJuggler

Install DiscJuggler

Open DiscJuggler

Select “Burn CD and DVD Images”

Locate the CDI image that you would like to burn. In order to do this, you may need to click on the little icon that looks like a piece of paper with a CD on the right side of it.

Press the “Start” button.

Burn an NRG image with Nero

Standard NRG images are not compatible with versions of Nero from 6.0 and later. In order to burn a standard NRG image (any NRG image you download from a Dreamcast-related web site), you will need to use Nero 5.x or earlier.

Download Nero 5.5.x from OldVersion.com (do not download any newer versions of Nero, because these images apparently are not compatible with any versions from 6.x.x and up).

Install Nero

Double-click on the NRG image you want to burn

Click “Write”

Burn a CDI or NRG image with Alcohol 120%

Download and install Alcohol 120%

Open the program.

Click on File -> Image Burning Wizard (or press Ctrl + B)

Click “Browse” to find the image you wish to burn.

Once you have located the image you wish to burn, press OK, then click Next.

Leave the settings the way they are. You should not need to change any of the settings, except possibly the burn speed. You need to set burn speed to 8x. Anything burned faster than 8x might not work properly in your Dreamcast. If it is not possible to select 8x, then please select the lowest possible speed.

Click “Start”

Burn a CDI with BootDreams

Open BootDreams

From the dropdown list that initially says “DiscJuggler”, choose “CDI Burner”.

Set the speed at which you want to burn the disc (you should not exceed 8x).

Press the “Browse” button, and locate the CDI that you would like to burn.

Browse to the image you want to burn, and select it.

Insert a blank CD into your CD burner.

Press the “Burn CDI Image” button.

When the prompt appears, asking you if you really want to burn the image, press “Yes”.

Choose your burner from the list that appears and press OK.

Watch the DOS window to make sure there are no errors.

If you are confronted with an error that says something like “Error 53 – File not found”…, please go to the Options menu and choose “Use Absolute Paths” to see if that corrects the error. If you still end up with a non-working disc after doing that, please report the problem to LyingWake.

Extract the Files From a CDI or NRG

Convert a CDI to NRG and burn it with Nero 6.x

Although standard NRG images are not compatible with Nero 6.x or later, there is a way to burn images with Nero 6.x. In order to do so, you will need to start with a CDI, though.

Download and install Nero 6.x or later from Ahead Software.

Download the CDI version of the image you would like to burn.

Download and install Selfboot Inducer v4, Selfboot Inducer v3 or Selfboot.

Navigate to the Tools folder within your Selfboot or Sbinducr directory.

Locate CDI2TAO.exe.

Double-click on CDI2TAO.exe

You will then be prompted to locate the CDI image you wish to convert. Please find it, and open it.

You will then be prompted to enter a new filename for the NRG image it will create. Please enter an appropriate name, and choose an appropriate file location, then click OK.

CDI2TAO.exe will then convert the CDI image to a Track-At-Once NRG image. These TAO images are the only type of image that Nero 6.x will burn properly for use on the Dreamcast.

Burn The Image With Nero 6.x Smart Start

Open Nero Smart Start

Mouse-over the “Copy and Back-up” icon, and then choose “Burn Image To Disc”

You will then be prompted to locate the NRG image you just created. Find it, and click “Open”

Choose the drive to which you wish to burn the image. Select the write speed, but do not set it higher than 8x.

Make certain you have a disc inserted in the drive, then click “Next”. Nero will now burn the image onto a disc.

Burn The Image With Nero 6.x Burning Rom

Open Nero Burning Rom 6.x

Go to Recorder -> Burn Image

You will then be prompted to locate the NRG image you just created

Find it and click OK

Set your write speed to 8x. Do not burn the disc at a speed higher than 8x.

Make certain that “Track-At-Once” is selected under “Write Method”

Click “Burn”

Extract the files With ISOBuster

Download ISOBuster

Install ISOBuster (everything you will be using this program for is included in the freeware version of ISOBuster, so you do not ever need to register).

Open ISOBuster.

Open the NRG or CDI image you wish to burn.

Select all of the files from the right hand side of the browser window.

Right-click.

Select “Extract …” (the one that is bold).

Choose the folder to which you would like to extract the files.

Use DSSBS to create a CDI, NRG, or CUE/BIN image to be burned with Alcohol 120%, Nero, DiscJuggler, CDRWin, or FireBurner.
or
Use Selfboot to create a CDI or NRG image, or to burn the image with CDRecord.
If you would like to use CDRecord, I suggest reading my tutorial on burning with CDRecord.

Mount the image with Alcohol 120%

Download and install Alcohol 120%

Open the program

Choose the virtual drive that was created by Alcohol 120%. At the bottom of the program GUI, you should see a list of your drives. The virtual drive created by Alcohol 120% will be listed under “Virtual CD/DVD Rom”. Click on it.

Then, right-click on that drive, and select “Mount Image” from the menu that appears. Or, you can simply press the Insert key on your keyboard, and the Mount Image dialog should appear.

Browse to find the image you wish to mount.

Then, open up Windows Explorer and locate the virtual drive.

Explore that drive, and copy all of the contents of that drive to a place on your harddrive.

Use DSSBS Final or Selfboot to create your own disc image.

Mount the image with Daemon Tools

This is the method that I recommend. Because I am broke, I cannot afford a full version of Nero (or Alcohol 120%, or any other software for that matter), and many people have said that they don’t like DiscJuggler (even though it allows you to use a full-functioning version without paying for it). However, this method allows you to use all freeware software, so you don’t have to pay for anything.

Download and install Daemon Tools

When you restart your computer, there should be an icon in your system tray.

Right-click on that icon, and select Virtual CD/DVD Rom -> Device 0: [F:] No Media -> Mount Image. (The letter of the virtual drive may be different than mine).

Browse to the image you wish to mount.

An explorer window will then open with all of the files from that image. Copy all of those files to a space on your harddrive.

Use DSSBS Final or Selfboot to create your own disc image.
