An image editor

The IP Tools package

This is a brief tutorial written by BlackPuma explaining how to insert a custom image into the IP.bin file used to boot a Dreamcast disc. This custom image will appear in the bottom right corner of the television screen when the disc is booted on your Dreamcast.

Download the tools package for this tutorial.

Install the included version of dir2boot.

Edit/Create your own logo. This image must meet the following criteria:

No larger than 320×90 pixels

No greater than 128 colors

No larger than 8 kilobytes (8192 bytes)

Must be saved in PNG format

Tip: for transparent background use this color #C0C0C0 (R:195, G:195, B:195)

Use pngtomr.exe to convert your png to an mr file ready to insert in IP.bin. pngtomr.exe is included in the tools package you already downloaded.

Example of command: pngtomr.exe sonic.png iplogo.mr

Place the newly created iplogo.mr to dir2boottools folder overwriting the Consolevision logo (or whichever logo happens to be there at the time).

Run dir2boot.exe to create a selfboot image of the app/demo/emu/game.
Tip: Keep a backpup of your IP.bin, because it will be altered.

Burn the image (Alcohol120%, DiscJuggler, Nero)

SBI Builder 3.1 – This application was put together by SiZiOUS, a prominent member of the French Dreamcast community. SBI Builder is everything anyone needs to make their own SBI’s. It will check your bin file to find out whether or not it is scrambled. It will unscramble your bin file if necessary. It will resize your screenshot if you want it to. It will automatically rename your readme file so that it matches the name of your bin file. It will automatically generate the dxl file for your SBI, so all you have to do is type in the name of the project, choose Game, Demo, App, or Emu from the menu, and write a short description (version number, author, etc.). It will also automatically generate a comment file that will be included with your SBI, so that you can add specific info on how to use the SBI, and that info will be viewable in the SBInducer GUI.
This newest version also added ELF support, in addition to creating a separate txt file based on the contents of the comment file you generate. That separate txt file will be included in the SBI if you choose to do so, so that MacDreamTool users can find that information as well.

IP.bin Creator – This application will create a custom IP.bin file for your Dreamcast software. You can include a custom boot logo, set various options to be specified in your IP.bin, and choose the name of your boot file (generally called 1st_Read.bin).

Elf2Bin Console App – This application was released by SiZiOUS. It will convert ELF files to BIN format for use on the DC. This app is included as part of his SBI Builder 3.1.

More information can be found at SiZiOUS’ web site.
