This tutorial covers how to use Selfboot Inducer to create a selfbooting Dream Inducer project disc for use in the Dreamcast console. This tutorial can not be used to back-up or create illegal copies of commercial Dreamcast games. Also, please note that the Dreamcast is incapable (without dangerous modifications) of reading CD-RW discs. Please do not ask for help with these processes if you are trying to burn your project onto a Re-Writable Compact Disc.

I keep creating Nero images, but when I burn them, they never work

Starting Out

First, let’s make sure you get the correct version of Selfboot Inducer, and that you get it installed and running. All of the SBI files mentioned below are compatible with SBInducer v3 and SBInducer v4. They are not compatible with any versions of SBInducer earlier than v3.

Download Sbindv4.exe from Sbiffy!com

Install SBInducr.exe into any directory on your harddrive. The best place to install it is in the default directory (C:/SBInducr/). Please note that Selfboot Inducer will not work if there are spaces anywhere in the directory path.
E.G. – “C:/DCTools/Selfboot_Inducer/” is okay. “C:/DC Tools/Selfboot_Inducer” is not okay.
Note – For purposes of this tutorial, we will assume that you installed it into “C:/SBInducr/”

Download all of the SBI’s you want. You should only download SBI files from Sbiffy!com or this web site, in order to ensure version compatibility.
Note: There are a few SBI’s on Sbiffy!com that do not work. So far, I hae discovered that the following items do not extract properly: Iris3D2000CD

Download a few SBT themes in which you may be interested. Again, you can download these from Sbiffy!com or from here. There are also quite a few DreamInducer themes on Boob!Covers, but (as far as I know) they are not in SBT format, so you will have to read my tutorial on creating an SBT archive in order to convert it to SBT format.
Note – You can only use one theme per disc, so please do not be disappointed if you put three or four themes in the directory, and only one of them appears on the disc. You will need to place one SBT in your /Sbinducr/SBI/ directory. This theme file will not appear in the file list when you open SBInducer. The program does that intentionally, so that you wouldn’t get confused and start thinking those were games.
Note – When you extract your files with SBInducer (see below to find out about that), the program will extract all of the selected SBI’s in alphabetical order. Then, after all of the SBI’s have been extracted, it will extract the SBT files in alphabetical order. If you have more than SBT file in your SBI directory, the last SBT alphabetically will overwrite all of the others.

Download all of the extras you may need. This includes legal roms, instruments, shareware packs, mp3’s etc.

Copy all of the SBI files that you downloaded into C:/SBInducr/SBI/.

Next, we need to introduce you to the elements of Selfboot Inducer, and how each one works.

The File List

The File List in Selfboot Inducer 4

See that window with a list of files in it? It’s off to your right. If it doesn’t have any files listed in it, then you don’t have any SBI’s in the correct directory. Close this application, and put your SBI’s in the “SBInducrSBI” directory.

Each of those files should have a plus symbol at its left (+). That signifies that that file will be part of your project. If you would like to remove the file from your project, all you need to do is highlight the filename by clicking on it with your mouse button. Then, press the “Deselect” button underneath the file list.

The Menu Options

Menu Type Selection in Selfboot Inducer 4

At the bottom left of the SBInducer GUI, you should see the words “Select Menu Type”, with a combobox below it. In that combobox, you will see three different choices: Multi Menu, Single Menu, and SBI2Boot.

Here is a description of each one:

Multi Menu

If you choose Multi Menu, then each of the different types of SBI will be given its own menu. For instance, if you have three emulators, two applications, and five games on the disc, then, when you load up the disc in your Dreamcast, you will see a menu that lists Apps, Games, and Emus. If you select “Games” from that menu, then you will see a new menu that lists the five games you put on the disc.

Single Menu

If you choose Single Menu, then all of your SBI’s will be listed on one menu. In other words, when you put the disc in your Dreamcast, you will see one menu that lists all of the apps, demos, emus and games that you put on that disc.

SBI2Boot

This option allows you to make a single-project selfbooting disc, much like you would do with the plain files and Selfboot (or DSSBS Final). In other words, if you decide to use SBI2Boot with the Feet of Fury demo, then, when you put the disc in your Dreamcast, Feet of Fury will load up automatically, all by itself.
If you use one of the first two options, then SBInducer will extract all of the SBI files that have been “selected” in the file list mentioned above. In other words, all of the files with a plus symbol next to them will be added to your project.

If you use the third option (SBI2Boot), then only the highlighted file will be added to your project. So, if you click your mouse on one of the files in the file list, it will be highlighted in blue. That file that is highlighted in blue is the project that will be selfbooted.

Extracting Your Files

After you have decided which files you want to add to your project, and you have decided which type of menu you want to create, then you need to extract your SBI’s. In order to do this, all you need to do is click the little barcode icon (found in the same frame as the “Select Menu Type” combobox). In the DOS window behind SBInducer, you will see a status update, letting you know which files are being extracted, and explaining any errors that may occur during the extraction process.

Adding Roms and Other Extras

Once you have extracted all of your SBI’s, you should close Selfboot Inducer and add all of your extras. Many of the SBI files have information included that explains where to place your roms, bios files, shareware/full version game files, sound files, images, etc. If that information does not appear in the left-pane of the SBInducer GUI, then please check in InducerReadme after you have extracted your SBI files.

Cleaning Up

When you are finished burning your project (see the information below for info on burning your project), you should clean out your Inducer directory. In order to do this, all you need to is press the icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the GUI (the one that looks like a blue trashcan). This will delete your Inducer directory, and restore it to its original format.

Creating a Disc Image

If you would like to create an image that will be burned with another program, then you simply need to click on the appropriate icon.

DiscJuggler

If you would like to create a CDI image that you will need to burn with DiscJuggler or Alcohol 120%, then you need to click the icon that looks like a snake.

Nero DAO

If you would like to create a DAO (Disc At Once) NRG image, which will need to be burned with either Nero 5.x (or earlier) or Alcohol 120%, then you need to click on the first icon that looks like a burning collisseum. Do not use Nero 6.x. The version of Nero you use must be earlier than 6.x.

Nero TAO

If you would like to create a TAO (Track At Once) NRG image, which you should be able to burn with any version of Nero or Alcohol 120%, then you need to click on the second icon that looks like a burning collisseum. This icon has the letters “TAO” branded across it. This is the only type of image that you will be able to burn with Nero 6 or later.

When you use the methods listed above, you will see a status update in the DOS window behind SBInducer. When the image is completed, you will need to close SBInducer and open the appropriate burning program.

How Do I Use CDRecord?

Selfboot Inducer 4 - Scanbus Information Screen

Selfboot Inducer 4 - Burn First Session

Selfboot Inducer 4 - Make ISO Image

Selfboot Inducer 4 - Burn Second Session

If you would like to burn your project through SBInducer, then you need to follow these steps:

Click on the CDRecord icon (looks like an open CD case)

A new page will appear in the SBInducer GUI (where the file list was).

Click on the “Scanbus” button (you will only need to do this the first time you use CDRecord).

Watch the DOS window behind SBInducer. A list of scanbus numbers will appear in the window. Find your burner in the list, and record the numbers that are listed to the left of your burner. Insert those numbers in the textbox that appears next to the “Scanbus” button. The number should be in this format: x,x,x

Choose at which speed you would like to burn the first session of the disc. You should never burn any Dreamcast projects at a speed higher than 12x. Enter the speed in the text box next to the first “Burn” button.

Click on the first “Burn” button, in the frame that says “Burn First Session”.

Watch the DOS window to find the status of the burning. Ten seconds after you click the button, you should hear your burner speed up for a minute or so, then slow down. Once the burner stops, you will see the words “Burn Complete” in the DOS window.

Click the “MSInfo” button (again, this is something you should only have to do the first time you use CDRecord).

Click the “Make ISO” button. If you would like to give your disc a unique volume name, please enter that name in the textbox before pressing the “Make ISO” button.

You will now see a status update in the DOS window. It will tell you how much of the ISO has been created, and at what time the ISO should be finished.

You will then see the words “ISO Created” in the DOS window.

Enter the speed at which you would like to burn the second session. Again, this should not be higher than 12x.

Press the second “Burn” button.

Watch the DOS window behind SBInducer. After waiting ten seconds, your burner will speed up, then slow down when it is finished. If you watch the DOS window, you will see updates of the burning progress.

When the disc is finished, your CD burner will eject itself.

Take the disc out of your burner, and place it in your DC. Enjoy your new project.

Note: If CDRecord does not work for you, try downloading “ForceASPI” and running it on your computer. A lot of times, the ASPI layer that is installed on your computer is not compatible with CDRecord, but most people have said that ForceASPI fixed their problems.

If, for any reason, you ever need to return to the normal SBInducer GUI, all you need to do is press the left arrow at the bottom of the CDRecord GUI.

Troubleshooting Tips

I get a weird Autoexec.nt error when I try to create an image

AutoExec NT Error

This seems to be caused by upgrading to Windows XP service pack 2. We haven’t figured out exactly what happens to your files, or why it occurs, but it appears that the solution is simply to overwrite your existing autoexec.nt file with a fresh copy. You should be able to find autoexec.nt on your Windows XP disc. If you are not able to find it, then you may want to search Google for that file, and download it again.

None of my SBI’s are showing up in the file list

Most likely, when you downloaded your SBI’s, your operating system automatically gave them ZIP or RAR extensions. Windows XP is notorious for doing so, especially when using it in conjunction with Internet Explorer. To correct the immediate problem, you will need to follow these steps:

Open up “My Computer”

Double-click on your harddrive, so that you can now see all of your folders.

Double-click on Sbinducr to open up that folder

Go to “Tools -> Folder Options”

Select the “View” tab

Unclick “Hide extensions for known file types”

Enter the SBI directory, and rename all of your files. They should all have an SBI extension, rather than a ZIP extension.

I keep creating Nero images, but when I burn them, they never work

In this case, you most likely didn’t read the tutorial thoroughly enough. If you are using Nero 6.x, regular Nero images will not work. You absolutely must create a TAO Nero image in order to burn it properly for your Dreamcast.

This is one of the most common problems that people encounter while trying to use Selfboot Inducer.

Close Selfboot Inducer.

Copy all of your extras into their appropriate directories. Make certain that they are all in the correct directories within C:/SBInducr/Inducer/. If you have questions about which files you need to add, please look inside C:/SBInducr/Inducer/Readme/ for the readme files associated with each of your SBI files.

Verify that everything is where you want it. If you are planning on putting DreamSNES on your disc, you should make sure that you have backup copies of your roms somewhere else on your harddrive before using the Rom Listing utility (a rom listing utility comes with the DreamSNES SBI file, but I generally use ProvList, so I won’t discuss this subject further).

Open Selfboot Inducer again. Click on the appropriate icon for the type of CD image you want to create. You have four options. The first icon is used to create a CDI image for use with DiscJuggler (can also be burned with Alcohol 120%). The second icon is for a Nero DAO (Disc At Once) image. The third icon is for creating a Nero TAO (Track At Once) image. The fourth icon in that row is to create the disc with CDRecord (included with Selfboot Inducer). If you choose to use CDRecord, you can find more information on using it by visiting my CDRecord tutorial.

Burn the disc and test it in your Dreamcast.

Before using Selfboot Inducer again, please open Selfboot Inducer again, and click on the last icon to clean out your Inducer directory.

Note – You will occasionally need to re-install Selfboot Inducer on your harddrive. Sometimes it simply quits working, but deleting it and re-installing it will almost always solve that problem.

This tutorial is designed to help people use CDRecord within the Selfboot or Selfboot Inducer v3 GUI. This tutorial does not cover using CDRecord to burn any type of disc other than selfbooting Dreamcast homebrew discs. It does not cover using CDRecord as a command-line utility.

Using CDRecord within the Selfboot GUI

Selboot CDRecord Config

Selfboot GUI

Selfboot should not be confused with Selfboot Inducer.

When you attempt to use CDRecord for the first time, you will need to configure it for use with your CD burner. Both Selfboot and Selfboot Inducer will attempt to configure it for you.
If you are using Selfboot, you simply need to click “Yes” when the dialog box pops up to ask if you want to configure CDRecord. Then, simply click “OK” on the next dialog box, and you are ready to roll.
Note: If you have previously used Selfboot, and did not configure CDRecord, you will need to find the file called Selfboot.ini within your Selfboot directory, and delete that file.

Once you have chosen the directory that you want to build an image from, choose “CDRecord” from the select box at the top of the Selfboot GUI.

Input the speed at which you want to burn the first session of the disc (selfbooting Dreamcast discs require two separate sessions). Do not burn any part of this disc at more than 12x. If you burn at higher than 12x, the disc will sometimes not work.

Click the first “Burn”.

Now wait. CDRecord will give you ten seconds to cancel the operation, then your burner will start running. When you hear your burner slow down and stop then you are ready for the next step. It will take between thirty seconds and two minutes, depending on the speed of your computer and the speed of your burner.

Click “Msinfo” and watch the Command Prompt screen. A one digit number, followed by a comma, followed by a five digit number will appear in the window. Input that number in the textbox to the right of the “Msinfo” button.

Input the Volume for your disc. This can be whatever you want the disc title to be. It can be up to 11 characters, and it can include only capital letters, numbers, and underscores.

Click on the “Make ISO” button. This will create an ISO 9660 image of the second session. This step may take a while, depending on the size of the project you are putting together. The ISO will be saved on your hard drive (in case you want to use it again later).

Input the speed at which you want to burn the second session. Keep in mind the same notes I added above.

Click on the second “Burn” button to finish the disc. This step may also take a while, depending on the speed at which you burn the disc, and the size of your project.

The completed disc will eject itself from your CD drive when it is finished. Label it with a Sharpie or disc label so that you will know what it is, and then put it in your DC to test it out.

Selfboot will save a small file on your harddrive called “Selfboot.ini“. This file contains information pertinent to CDRecord (the scsibus of your CD burner, and the msinfo from the first session of the disc).

Note: If CDRecord does not work for you, try downloading “ForceASPI” and running it on your computer. A lot of times, the ASPI layer that is installed on your computer is not compatible with CDRecord, but most people have said that ForceASPI fixed their problems.

Using CDRecord within the Selfboot Inducer v3 GUI

Selboot Inducer CDRecord Configuration

Selfboot Inducer - Step 2 - Select Burn Speed and Find MSInfo

Selfboot Inducer - Step 3 - Create the ISO and Burn the Image

These steps are slightly different for other versions of SBI.

If you are using Selfboot Inducer, you will need to do a bit more. First, you need to click on the button that says “Scanbus“. Then, look in the Command Prompt window (DOS prompt) to find the list of drives on your computer. Locate your CD burner, and remember the number all the way to the left hand side of that row. Type that number into the box at the bottom of Selfboot Inducer exactly as it appears in the window. The number should be a one digit number, followed by a comma, followed by a second one digit number, followed by a second comma, and then a third one digit number. Then click on the arrow at the bottom that points to the right..

Input the speed at which you want to burn the first session of the disc (selfbooting Dreamcast discs require two separate sessions). Do not burn any part of this disc at more than 12x. If you burn at higher than 12x, the disc will sometimes not work.

Click the “Burn” button.

Click on the arrow pointing to the right, at the bottom of the Selfboot Inducer GUI.

Click on the “Make ISO” button. This will create an ISO 9660 image of the second session. This step may take a while, depending on the size of the project you are putting together. The ISO will be saved on your harddrive as “data.iso” within the same directory you have Selfboot Inducer installed. If you want to use the same ISO at a later date, you can follow all of the same steps I am describing here, but simply skip the “Make ISO” step and move on to the next one.

Input the speed at which you want to burn the second session. Keep in mind the same notes I added above.

Click on the “Burn” button to finish the disc. This step may also take a while, depending on the speed at which you burn the disc, and the size of your project.

The completed disc will eject itself from your CD drive when it is finished. Label it with a Sharpie or disc label so that you will know what it is, and then put it in your DC to test it out.

Selfboot Inducer will save a small file on your harddrive called “CDRecord.ini“. This file contains information pertinent to CDRecord (the scsibus of your CD burner, and the msinfo from the first session of the disc).

If you click on the arrow pointing to the right again, it will bring you back to the main Selfboot Inducer GUI, so that you can clean out your Inducer directory if you want to.

Note: If CDRecord does not work for you, try downloading “ForceASPI” and running it on your computer.
Burn the Image to a Disc

Burn a CDI image with DiscJuggler

Download DiscJuggler

Install DiscJuggler

Open DiscJuggler

Select “Burn CD and DVD Images”

Locate the CDI image that you would like to burn. In order to do this, you may need to click on the little icon that looks like a piece of paper with a CD on the right side of it.

Press the “Start” button.

Burn an NRG image with Nero

Standard NRG images are not compatible with versions of Nero from 6.0 and later. In order to burn a standard NRG image (any NRG image you download from a Dreamcast-related web site), you will need to use Nero 5.x or earlier.

Download Nero 5.5.x from OldVersion.com (do not download any newer versions of Nero, because these images apparently are not compatible with any versions from 6.x.x and up).

Install Nero

Double-click on the NRG image you want to burn

Click “Write”

Burn a CDI or NRG image with Alcohol 120%

Download and install Alcohol 120%

Open the program.

Click on File -> Image Burning Wizard (or press Ctrl + B)

Click “Browse” to find the image you wish to burn.

Once you have located the image you wish to burn, press OK, then click Next.

Leave the settings the way they are. You should not need to change any of the settings, except possibly the burn speed. You need to set burn speed to 8x. Anything burned faster than 8x might not work properly in your Dreamcast. If it is not possible to select 8x, then please select the lowest possible speed.

Click “Start”

Burn a CDI with BootDreams

Open BootDreams

From the dropdown list that initially says “DiscJuggler”, choose “CDI Burner”.

Set the speed at which you want to burn the disc (you should not exceed 8x).

Press the “Browse” button, and locate the CDI that you would like to burn.

Browse to the image you want to burn, and select it.

Insert a blank CD into your CD burner.

Press the “Burn CDI Image” button.

When the prompt appears, asking you if you really want to burn the image, press “Yes”.

Choose your burner from the list that appears and press OK.

Watch the DOS window to make sure there are no errors.

If you are confronted with an error that says something like “Error 53 – File not found”…, please go to the Options menu and choose “Use Absolute Paths” to see if that corrects the error. If you still end up with a non-working disc after doing that, please report the problem to LyingWake.

Extract the Files From a CDI or NRG

Convert a CDI to NRG and burn it with Nero 6.x

Although standard NRG images are not compatible with Nero 6.x or later, there is a way to burn images with Nero 6.x. In order to do so, you will need to start with a CDI, though.

Download and install Nero 6.x or later from Ahead Software.

Download the CDI version of the image you would like to burn.

Download and install Selfboot Inducer v4, Selfboot Inducer v3 or Selfboot.

Navigate to the Tools folder within your Selfboot or Sbinducr directory.

Locate CDI2TAO.exe.

Double-click on CDI2TAO.exe

You will then be prompted to locate the CDI image you wish to convert. Please find it, and open it.

You will then be prompted to enter a new filename for the NRG image it will create. Please enter an appropriate name, and choose an appropriate file location, then click OK.

CDI2TAO.exe will then convert the CDI image to a Track-At-Once NRG image. These TAO images are the only type of image that Nero 6.x will burn properly for use on the Dreamcast.

Burn The Image With Nero 6.x Smart Start

Open Nero Smart Start

Mouse-over the “Copy and Back-up” icon, and then choose “Burn Image To Disc”

You will then be prompted to locate the NRG image you just created. Find it, and click “Open”

Choose the drive to which you wish to burn the image. Select the write speed, but do not set it higher than 8x.

Make certain you have a disc inserted in the drive, then click “Next”. Nero will now burn the image onto a disc.

Burn The Image With Nero 6.x Burning Rom

Open Nero Burning Rom 6.x

Go to Recorder -> Burn Image

You will then be prompted to locate the NRG image you just created

Find it and click OK

Set your write speed to 8x. Do not burn the disc at a speed higher than 8x.

Make certain that “Track-At-Once” is selected under “Write Method”

Click “Burn”

Extract the files With ISOBuster

Download ISOBuster

Install ISOBuster (everything you will be using this program for is included in the freeware version of ISOBuster, so you do not ever need to register).

Open ISOBuster.

Open the NRG or CDI image you wish to burn.

Select all of the files from the right hand side of the browser window.

Right-click.

Select “Extract …” (the one that is bold).

Choose the folder to which you would like to extract the files.

Use DSSBS to create a CDI, NRG, or CUE/BIN image to be burned with Alcohol 120%, Nero, DiscJuggler, CDRWin, or FireBurner.
or
Use Selfboot to create a CDI or NRG image, or to burn the image with CDRecord.
If you would like to use CDRecord, I suggest reading my tutorial on burning with CDRecord.

Mount the image with Alcohol 120%

Download and install Alcohol 120%

Open the program

Choose the virtual drive that was created by Alcohol 120%. At the bottom of the program GUI, you should see a list of your drives. The virtual drive created by Alcohol 120% will be listed under “Virtual CD/DVD Rom”. Click on it.

Then, right-click on that drive, and select “Mount Image” from the menu that appears. Or, you can simply press the Insert key on your keyboard, and the Mount Image dialog should appear.

Browse to find the image you wish to mount.

Then, open up Windows Explorer and locate the virtual drive.

Explore that drive, and copy all of the contents of that drive to a place on your harddrive.

Use DSSBS Final or Selfboot to create your own disc image.

Mount the image with Daemon Tools

This is the method that I recommend. Because I am broke, I cannot afford a full version of Nero (or Alcohol 120%, or any other software for that matter), and many people have said that they don’t like DiscJuggler (even though it allows you to use a full-functioning version without paying for it). However, this method allows you to use all freeware software, so you don’t have to pay for anything.

Download and install Daemon Tools

When you restart your computer, there should be an icon in your system tray.

Right-click on that icon, and select Virtual CD/DVD Rom -> Device 0: [F:] No Media -> Mount Image. (The letter of the virtual drive may be different than mine).

Browse to the image you wish to mount.

An explorer window will then open with all of the files from that image. Copy all of those files to a space on your harddrive.

Use DSSBS Final or Selfboot to create your own disc image.
