A year ago today, our 50th issue, the Sega Dreamcast launched in
America. Sega had brought in almost $100 Million for stores nationwide,
and taken a huge step, nay leap, forward to returning to their former
glory. Now Sep 9th 2000 is here, and Sega's took another big step, the
launch of online gaming with Sega.net. To celebrate in this issue we
take a look back at the twleve months, the good, the bad, and of course
the future.

Then if we can drag you away from NFL 2K1, there's also rumors about
Toejam & Earl 3, and Soul Calibur 2. Cheats for San Fancisco Rush 2049
and Space Channel 5, new details including the price, release date, and
more on Unreal Tournament, and finally... help for people stuck signing
up to Sega.net!

Stop Press: Do you know of, or are part of, a Sega Online Clan? We're
searching for clans to be included in an upcoming feature. If you can
help please e-mail me on Madcow@ihug.co.nz Thanks for your help!

Until next time remember, The Game Is Never Over!

>>>> Sega Dreamcast's First Anniversary
     - Written by Graham "Tails" Parker - Madcow@ihug.co.nz

What could a gaming console hope for during it’s first year on the harsh
battle fields that are retail shelves? Some record breaking sales? A few
prestigious awards? Games that redefine every genre, perhaps? Well,
today lets take a look back at Sega Dreamcast’s first year of electronic
life, and see how things went.

Just over one year ago today the internet was alive with Sega-starved
gamers waiting for the American release of the first ever 128-bit
videogame console, the Dreamcast. Internet message boards overflowed
with first impressions from those who shelled out to rent a console and
Sonic Adventure, and among the hottest topics in chatrooms was who would
be skipping school or work on September 9th, 1999. It was the beginning
of gaming's next generation.

That date marked one of the most important in Sega’s entire history,
right up there with the introduction of Sonic the Hedgehog as their
mascot almost ten years before. If Sega pulled another Saturn debacle,
like some were predicting they would, it's likely that they wouldn't
have had the money to carry on any longer. But thanks to the staff of
Sega of America, all abuzz with excitement and change, the Dreamcast
not only broke sale records on it’s release, it shattered them, showing
no mercy.

Brining in exactly $97,904,618.09 in the first twenty-four hours at
retail, Sega earned a spot in history for the biggest single day of
entertainment retail sales. To get an idea of just how impressive that
is, the previous record holder was "Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom
Menace," which earned a whopping $28 million on it’s first day in
theaters on May 19th, 1999. In the following four days, the Dreamcasts
continued to fly off the shelves, selling a record 372,000 consoles.
Retailers couldn’t have been happier, and as Daniel DeMatteo, President
of Babbage’s, Etc. put it, "There is simply no comparison to the launch
of Sega Dreamcast. This launch easily surpassed our expectations, and
we expect consumer demand to get even stronger as we head into the
important holiday shopping months."

He was right, and despite some GD-ROM problems, in the first two weeks
Dreamcast broke further sales records held by Sony PlayStation, Apple
iMac, Nintendo N64, and DVD players. Over half a million Americans had
given the Sega Dreamcast a place in their homes. The console was named
"Machine Of The Year" by Time Magazine, "Best Product Of 1999" by
Business Week, and received the "Best Of What’s New" award from Popular
Science Magazine. Then again, to the surprise of many, before the
Christmas month of December even began, Sega announced that it had sold
one million consoles nationwide.

The month of December was a huge success. The Dreamcast was indeed the
must-have product of the Christmas shopping season year, selling a
console every ten minutes, and with an average of game-to-console ratio
of three to one. By December 24th, Sega had sold 1.5 million units,
surpassed all of their own projections, and earned themselves a very
merry Christmas.

Unfortunately, the year 2000 hasn’t been quite as successful for Sega,
with sales being much lower and many in the electronic gaming media
still reluctant to give Sega its due after a powerful launch and a
show-stealing performance at E3 Expo 2000. With the impending releases
of three major videogame consoles in the next thirteen months, some
developers have left Sega’s machine, claiming it’s "Game Over" for
Dreamcast already. But with the launch of SegaNet, a great online NFL
game in NFL 2K1 to kick off the network, and more new online titles
announced, including Unreal Tournament, the future still looks bright.

Coming back to the present, though, Sega has given gamers everything
they could hope for out of a new machine, taking a plethora of game
genres to the next level. Power Stone and Soul Calibur revolutionized
fighting games. Chu Chu Rocket took puzzle games onto the Internet,
while Ecco the Dolphin kept adventure fans busy and with their mouths
wide open in awe. Resident Evil: CODE Veronica took the horror-
survival into full 3D for the first time, and Sonic Adventure brought
the blue Sega mascot and his virtual pals into adventure immortality.

NFL 2K was hailed as the greatest NFL sports game in history, Virtua
Tennis proved how Sega still has their touch of golden gameplay, and
racers such as Sega Rally 2 and Ferrari 355 were enough to keep any
gamer behind the wheel. Finally, there were the games that truly
showed how original Sega is, including the voice-activated Seaman,
the insane Crazy Taxi, and the hottest dance game this side of the
galaxy, Space Channel 5. By any reasonable standards, that’s a
stunning amount of revolutionary titles in one single year.

But the impressive lineup won't stop there. Sega is still working to
bring role-playing games up to the next level with Phantasy Star
Online and Shenmue, while fans of shooters will at long last get to
battle against PC gamers on Quake III Arena. Yes, this next year is
going to be even more interesting than the last, as Sega plans to
pull out all the stops in their fight against other next-gen
consoles. It’s taken the company years to get ready for this
position where they stand a chance at earning a good share of the
market back, and their first year went quite well. As Sega has proven
over these past twelve months to anyone who thought that Saturn was
the death knell, the game is never over.

So go forth and give your Dreamcast a first birthday party, be it
racing your sibling at Metropolis Street Racer, getting friends around
for a four-player smash on Power Stone, or taking on all of America
with NFL 2K1. Celebrate the next level of gameplay with the Sega
Dreamcast. If you're looking for sheer electronic entertainment, it
seems you’ve backed a winning console.

>>>> Unreal Tournament - Hot New Details

Now that Sega.net has launched, the online games just keep on rolling
in. But shooters recently disapointed by the news of Half Life being
offline only, will again have something to look forward to after Quake
3's release. Infogrames have confirmed Unreal Tournament's Dreamcast
conversion, and what's more it supports twice the number of players
Quake 3 does! That's eight players fragging each other across the
country on Sega.net. Unreal Tournament is due to be unleashed upon
America this November 28th, also for a cheaper price of $39.99.

>>>> Sega.net HELP - By Kevin Parrish

After being on the phone with SegaNet for over 30 minutes trying to
figure out why my mail isn't working, I discovered a few interesting
things that I thought I'd share.

First, if you downloaded the SegaNet dialer Thursday or Friday for your
PC, then you need to go here to download the newest version released
this morning ( http://newbrowser.sega.com/pcdialer.html ). Many readers
have e-mailed me with dialer errors and lock-ups. I suggest downloading
this new version and trying it out. There's also a fix in the local
number list as well (someone at SegaNet told me it was ok to do this).

Also, if you need the newest browser for your Dreamcast (I'm told the
latest is on the Official Dreamcast Magazine's September CD), head over
to this page to order your browser for free
( http://newbrowser.sega.com/ )!

And finally, for now, I thought I'd report that there are definitely
problems with several of the e-mail servers. The one I'm personally
having problems is with "pope.sega.net." There was no indication as to
when the problem would be resolved, but I'm sure SegaNet is working
non-stop to provide us with trouble-free service.

Remember that when setting up your e-mail accounts, you have to put the
first letter of your log-in name after the "pop" or "mail" addresses.
For instance, if your log-in name is Bubba, then your incoming mail
server address would be popb.sega.net and the outgoing mail server
address would be mailb.sega.net.

Also, when setting up you Dial-Up in either Dial-Up Networking or the
Dreamcast, remember that your User Name must have the "@sega.net" for it
to work. Using the example above, Bubba's User Name would be
"bubba@sega.net" (without quotes of course). Also, when setting up the
Dreamcast, you DO NOT NEED the DNS numbers in order to connect to the
SegaNet service. If you look in Dial-Up Networking on your computer and
check out the SegaNet shortcut, you'll see that there are no DNS numbers
specified. It's also a good place to look for the local access number.

Can't remember how to get into the Internet options on your Dreamcast?
Load the browser and hit the Start button. The 9-button graphic will
appear, and the icon should be on the bottom-right of the small menu. Go
into Options and choose Internet Options. There you need to fill in the
settings, and then let the Dreamcast save it to memory. The Email
Account settings should work the same as you did on the PC.
Unfortunately, under Optional Settings, you can only choose between 15
minutes and 30 minutes idle time before the modem hangs up (if you have
the Dreamcast keyboard, now is a good time to disable the on-screen
keyboard).

Thanks goes out to SegaNet for letting me post the link to the newer
Dialer, and if you are NOT a member yet, then you must not download this
dialer and get it through proper channels!

If you still have problems and can't get SegaNet to help you out, then
drop me a message ( mailto:kpsegax@sega.net ) and we'll see what we can
do to help you out!

Update 11pm: Thanks go out to Alex Perry for sending the word that
SegaNet technicians are telling users that the dialer is totally
optional. I have no proof of this, however I personally haven't used it
since I signed on the first time. I connect to SegaNet via the Dial-Up
connection made by the dialer in Dial-Up Networking. Evidently, tech
support will actually help you set up your connection without the
dialer...

SegaNet told me that they will NOT be posting the list of local numbers.
If you need to know if SegaNet is in your area, then you'll have to call
1-866-SEGA-NET to find out. I know that's bogus, and I told them that on
the phone (ridiculous that you have to go through enrollment before you
know whether or not you're calling within your local area).

 (((  RED HOT RUMORS  )))                                     | Page 4 |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each week here we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around, but please remember these are only rumors.
>>>> Soul Calibur 2 :(
Is that an unhappy face I see next to one to our most anticipated
games? Unfortunately, yes. Rumors out of Japan have suggested the long
awaited sequel from Namco is indeed on it's way, but using a 256-bit
Playstation 2 compatabile board over Sega's 128-bit Naomi. Will Namco
remain a one-hit-wonder on the Dreamcast? Or will they pull out all
the stops and bring us a Dreamcast conversion of Soul Calibur 2? Only
time, and perhaps the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, will tell. - Tails
>>>> Toejam & Earl 3 Hit The Web
On some message boards, people are saying that the upcoming ToeJam
& Earl will be online compatible.
Toejam & Earl was originally created for the Sega Genesis, and it has
been one of the best games created for that system. The only problem was
that there wasn't enough advertising or hype for the game, but all of
that is going to change since its coming to Dreamcast. The game is based
with two main characters Toejam & Earl. These characters crashed their
space ship and need to find the missing parts for it, and they have to
finally rebuild their ship.
This game can be played online when it comes out against other people
via Seganet. I would think that you can team up with other people to
help find the missing pieces to your ship, or maybe they can exchange
powerups or presents in the game. Presents in Toejam & Earl were special
surprise items that you can use in the game. Expect this game to come out
next year. By: Michael Monahan
