>>>> South Park Rally PAL Review
-- Written by Tails
Omigod... YOU killed Kenny! South Park Rally is the latest attempt at
brining the sophisticated humor (heh) of the hit cartoon show to your
videogame console. From the poor shooting game on the N64, to the
horrible Chef's Luv Shack on the Dreamcast, South Park's license has
been somewhat of a curse to developers in the past. But could the tried
and tested kart racing genre finally put the Beefcake back into South
Park?
Upon booting up, South Park fans will instantly be rewarded as the
well known intro song plays, and several farting sounds await you on
the main menu. All your favorite characters from the show are playable,
including Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, Wendy, Chef, Officer Barbrady,
and Uncle Jimbo. But that's only the beginning, there's a total of
over 20 different characters waiting to be unlocked, from Big Gay Al,
to Satan himself!
This is where the games first problem comes up however, while there are
enough characters hidden away to excite any fan, the actual gameplay
just isn't interesting enough, and you'll soon get board. Be it out of
the repetitive gameplay or the frustrating missions South Park Rally
will soon be put back on your game shelf to gather dust until your
friends come around and say, "A South Park game? Kick Ass!!!".
Unfortunately to get more than one multiplayer track to have fun with
your mates you'll have to work (it really is work!) your way through
the single player missions, and the chances of doing that is about the
same as Cartman going on a diet. The second level for example has you
playing capture-the-flag with a trophy which you must take over all
four checkpoints. But unless you've got Mr Hankey protecting your kart
it won't be long until another character steals the trophy from you
and the frustration begins.
The next mission gives everyone a healthy dose of Madcow disease, and
you must hold on to the cure until your disease-free. Sound familiar?
Or how about grabbing Satans Dimensional Key and holding it for two
minutes? Each of the games 14 missions are far too similar for it's
own good. The result is even though there are plenty of characters to
unlock, you just don't feel bothered to try and complete the game.
The controls don't help either, which clearly could have benefited
from some extra play testing before the games release. For general
racing they are fine, but in missions when you hit a train crossing
the road, and the trophy is stolen off you, reversing, turning
around, and chasing after them can be very frustrating indeed. Many
a time have I given up on this game, and literally dreaded trying the
mission again later. Don't even think about plugging in that steering
wheel!
But there are good points to the South Park Rally, it's just a pity
they can't compare to it's problems. Power-ups and weapons are
littered throughout each course, and all will bring a laugh from
regular viewers of the cartoon. Using an Anal Probe to fire a laser
at Cartman, or freezing your opponent with the Mexican Staring Frog
adds much needed fun to the mix. Over 20 power-ups are included, and
each one can be explained during the loading screens.
The graphics aren't too bad either, but they certainly aren't going
to impress anyone. Other cartoon style racers such as Wacky Racers
show how it can be done. While I'm glad they opted for 3D graphics,
over the shows 2D cut-outs, I can't help but feel the developers
could have done better.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have done the honors of making sound
bites just for South Park Rally, but if only they had given it a
good playing through before allowing it's release. Overall I'd
advise giving this a miss, and the money is better spent buying the
movie, Bigger, Longer & Uncut. It's got far more humor, a much
higher lastability rating that this game, and of course the brilliant
songs. Blame Canada...

The Weeks News page is presented by Sega X: http://www.segadreamcast.net
>>>> New Games This Week
After the games canned last week it's nice to see some developers
continue their Dreamcast support and reveal new titles. Star Wars:
Demolition is the first, and is a combat driving game from the minds
behind Vigilante 8. With the help of LucasArts this will be the first
game to include vehicles and levels from every Star Wars film. From
Luke to Anakin, Star Wars Demolition is being released on the Dreamcast
this fall.
The next title to be announced was Xtreme Sports from Infogrames, and
is due out this October. Sports include Snowboarding, ATV racing,
Mountain Biking, Hand Gliding, and of all things, Bungee Jumping! Quite
how the last sport works remains a mystery at the moment, but more will
be revealed before the games release in two months. Finally Xtreme
Sports allows you to download ghost players and new tracks off the
internet, along with posting your highest scores on a table. - Tails
>>>> US Release Dates
When are the biggest games due out in the next two months? These are the
dates to remember:
Ferrari 355 - September 1st
NFL 2K1 - September 6th
Half Life - September 8th
Bleemcast - September 15th
Quake III: Areana - October 11th
Jet Grind Radio - October 18th
>>>> Dreamcast Price Drop Down Under
If you're in Australia than its time to party! Ozisoft, Dreamcast's
distributor in the land down under, has announced it will be
dramatically slashing the price to $299 AUD, or $175 American. What's
even better, this means the Aussie Dreamcast is the lowest prices
console, prior to rebate in any of the territories. As you already know,
Sega of America currently offers a juicy rebate on their console after
you pick one up for $199. Considered a wise move by Ozisoft, its hoped
this will help increase interest in the console. Furthermore, it
coincides with the company's new move onto the entire, using DreamKey.
We'll keep you abreast of any future drops in Australia and around the
world. - Mike Bess
>>>> Samba De Amigo Stateside!
Ready to shake those maracas Sonic Team style? On October 18th the
import game that's had gamers and professional editors dancing as if no
one was watching finally gets a US release. The title will be sold at a
slightly cheaper price of $39.99, but if your serious about your fun
you'll want to pick up the maracas too. These shakers will put you back
another $79.99, pumping the total up to a high $120, but it's well
worth it to get into the true Samba spirit. - Tails

((( RED HOT RUMORS ))) | Page 4 |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each week here we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around, but please remember these are only rumors.
>>>> Can You Smell That?
Recently, a new kind of hardware device was created for the Dreamcast
system. "Ismell" created by Joel Bellenson and Dexster Smith, is a new
system that sends out a smell into your room from your Dreamcast system.
The new Ismell system sends out an odor from a can shaped system that
plugs into your Dreamcast console. The Ismell system receives digital
signals from the game that your playing and transforms them into a
smell. The system includes a line of oils and other compositions that
mixes together to form the scent that you're expecting to smell from
your system. The system also includes a built in fan to get the smells
out into the air so you can enjoy the sweet scent of your game.
This system has been picked up from the company Eidos (ever wondered
what deodorant Lara Croft wears? - Tails), so you may find this item
sniffing its way into your house in the near future. A price has not
been set for this system yet. A release date has not been confirmed for
this system either, but it should be within a year. Stay tuned for more
information on this topic as it comes in. By: Michael Monahan
