thing is a deadly sin? Perhaps your a Sony-fan boy just on this list for

console wars and corporate hype, and to have a look at why you play
games in the first place. A must read.
Then in the rumors page did someone mention Lunar 3 for the Dreamcast?
And was it the general manager of Gamearts? Oops! Maybe I've already
given away the whole story. But as I said check out the rumors page for
more details.
And what the hey... let's give away something this week too. How about

the world, but please enter only once.
Finally thanks to the readers that sent in an e-mail about Spirit Of

>>>> For The Hardcore Only
- Written by Kevin DuPuy
Tails - "Before we get into this editorial, I'd like to put it every
gamer out there to read this from start to finish. Be you a Sega fanboy
that doesn't believe Sony should have a chance, a Sony-Only gamer that
will instantly write this off as another Sega-bias feature and open
their e-mail program ready to flame, or anyone else for that matter,
please read this through. Maybe you'll have a revelation too. I know I
for one am off to go finish Star Ocean 2 in a minute (the Playstation
RPG), then I think I'll build a new racing track on the Dreamcast's
V-Rally 2. Now if only I could afford an N64 and Perfect Dark I'll be
set. This might seem strange after last weeks news item on the PS2.IGN
editor, but I'm still happy with that... because it's addressed to the
gamers who blindly follow PS2." - Tails
The other day I had a sort of revelation. It wasn't so much a SUDDEN
revelation, or even a new found realization at that, as thoughts
revolving around this revelation had been brewing in my head for quite
some time. Since I'm sure you're sick of see all these "r" words I'll
just flat out say it: there aren't enough quality launch titles for the
Playstation 2 to warrant my purchase come October 26. There, I said it,
and let the flame war begin.
I'm sure to many (especially you Sega, Nintendo, and, do you even exist,
Microsoft fanboys) this thought was more of a given as opposed to a
full-on revelation. Many moons ago, long before Sony announced their
plans for a PS2, all you anti-Sony fans were probably already planning
on supporting whatever system was going to go up against Sony. Blind
loyalty at its best.
The division of gamers that Sony has created with the Playstation is
enough to make even the most hardcore sociologist go insane. You see,
over the years I've come to notice that gamers who support Sony in
whatever (and I mean whatever) they do are usually relatively new to the
gaming scene. They're either way too young to remember the Atari/classic
arcade days, or way too old to take notice of the "exciting" exploits of
Pikachu and the rest of the Pokemon bunch. I could go on and on about
the marketing brilliance that was the Playstation, but to spare you the
boringness of it all (and to write that funny word in the process) all
I'll say is that Sony definitely hit their mark when they brought these
"fringe" players into the world of videogames.
But to complicate the situation even more one must factor in the young
adults, the 18-20 year olds who probably spent more time with Mario,
Link, and John Madden (the digital John Madden folks) than they did
their own families. These are the gamers who most likely know and recite
by heart both the Konami code and the password to skip straight to Mike
Tyson. Now when Sony released the Playstation back in 1995 all Hell
broke lose, as over time this group of young adults broke off into two
distinct sects- the extremely anti-Sony and the extremely pro-Sony.
The anti-Sony gamers (whom I'll call the..........anti-Sony gamers
because I'm not clever enough to come up with a good nickname) despised
the way the electronics giant bought there way into the industry (they
did you know), killing the Saturn way ahead of it's time and bringing
Nintendo down to it's knees. "Where is the love?" they scream at the top
of their lungs, "WHERE IS THE LOVE??"
Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum you have the pro-Sony gamers
(whom I'll call the Sony Ones, as they're probably the only ones who
will be foolish enough to buy one of those silly, way-too-early-to-be-
hitting-the-market things this September). These guys and gals love the
Playstation with all their heart. The sheer number of titles published
on their favorite machine is enough ammunition for three out of every
four "console war" debates.
So now that we've got the "fringe" gamers, the anti-Sony fans, and the
Sony Ones covered, there's really only one group left: the ever-elusive
hardcore gamer. Yes the hardcore gamer, the one that sees it all, plays
it all, and knows....most of it all in the world of videogames. These
gamers aren't stuck on brand loyalty, these players are in it for the
sheer thrill of the game. These are the gamers who don't need to recite
the Konami code to prove that they're "with it", they just know they
are. Oh sure, sometimes they come out and make themselves known in the
gaming circuit, but usually that's just to shut those whiny fanboys up
and tell them what's what. These gamers do it all. Importing? Pretty
standard fare. Keeping up on gaming news likes it's the 2000
Presidential Election? Seems fairly normal. Setting aside an entire
weekend to sit in your underwear and play........sorry, a bit too
personal there. Underwear aside, you get the point. These gamers may
have some hidden ill-will towards Sony, or one of the other console
manufacturers, but damn if they don't think Mario 64, NiGHTS, and Metal
Gear Solid are three of the finest games around.
So that (sort of) leads me to my revelation, and who would have thought
that it would come from a simple preliminary release list. The other day
I was checking out a Playstation 2 website and, in an obvious attempt to
get gamers fired up, they posted an early list of the October 26 launch
titles. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but a lot of developers are
confident that their games are going to make it before Christmas 2000.
Having already reserved a PS2 I checked out the list to see what I was
going to be getting. Here are my initial reactions: "Hmmm, OK, Tekken
Tag Team, Ridge Racer V, and Street Fighter EX 3, we all know how those
are going to go. Unreal Tournament with no internet play. They're
kidding, right? Gradius III and IV, wow, I'm pumped now. Phew, let's see
what's down a little further. Oh sweet, about 100 sports games I'm not
interested in and a bunch of adventure titles I'm SURE will be the same
stuff we've been seeing for years now, but with better graphics."
Yes folks, it was then that I had the revelation that there just isn't
enough good stuff coming out to warrant the purchase a PS2 come October.
Actually, a few seconds later I realized that there WAS a reason I was
going to get a PS2. It looks like I already know how those gamers in
Japan feel about their PS2s-it's most spectacular feature is not the
backwards compatibility, the Emotion Engine, or the lack of
anti-aliasing, it's the DVD player. I'm pretty much buying a $300 DVD
player that will SOME DAY have some great games for it, games like
Munch's Oddyssey, MGS2, and The Bouncer (it will NOT come out before
2001, I guarantee you that). But as of October 26 I'll be buying
prettier versions of games I've already played before, and an expensive,
though quality, DVD player.
So considering my long talk about the different types of gamers out
there and the fact that this is being printed on a Sega sight, I guess
you're wondering how this all works together. That, my friends, is the
easy part. What this next generation of gaming is going to do, and what
it already is doing right now, is show us who are the hardcore gamers
and who are the blind fools. In the present day, June 2000 for those of
you who are out of the loop, if you don't already have a Dreamcast you
are not to be considered a hardcore gamer at all. Disregarding the fact
that Sega's literally GIVING the Dreamcast away for free, the current
library of amazing, ground-breaking titles and the reality of internet
gaming finally hitting a console in a big way literally make this system
a gamer's dream. Considering you're reading a Sega-only website means
you already know how great the Dreamcast is, so nothing more needs to be
said. But if anyone out there still doesn't have one then I am forced to
make you stop reading this article right now. See ya...........ok,
that's better.
Having a Dreamcast aside, the next way we'll know who the hardcore are
and aren't is going to happen between October 26 and Thanksgiving. If
you come up to me on October 27 and say to my face "The PS2 has some of
the most revolutionary games I've ever seen" I'm going to laugh at you
and proceed to walk away. A line like that is not going to be spoken
from a hardcore gamer's mouth. Yes, I realize that every system launch
has a lot of "flash over substance" titles, but usually there are those
games that really show us what the system has got, those games that,
even though they come out during the first few weeks the system is
released, are unmatched for a long time to come. Almost all of the great
systems have had them, from the NES to the Dreamcast, so to see a system
like the PS2, with all its self-proclaimed power, not looking like it's
going to have such a "ground breaking" title it seems to be a big waste,
and a hardcore gamer's nightmare. This launch may have more titles than
any launch before it, but I'll bet that none of them reach the glory of
Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast or have the same impact that an arcade-
perfect Ridge Racer on the Playstation had back in 1995. As I said, I'm
thankful for the DVD features, or the PS2 would be the first system I'd
ever bought that would start collecting dust a week after it's launch.
Though as time goes on, and the PS2 launch fades from history, the
hardcore gamer will show him or herself long into 2001 and 2002. You see
the same laugh I'll use on those PS2-launchloving gamers I'll use when
someone comes up to me and says "I hate Nintendo. They're too late and
they make pure kiddie crap". I'll use the same laugh when someone comes
up to me and says "I hate Microsoft. They're money-grubbing poo-heads
who don't know anything about gaming". And I'll use the same laugh when
I hear someone say "I hate PC games. They're too buggy and the games are
too complex". To all these comments I say a big, loud "Pfffft." If you
will seriously turn your back on the next version of Zelda, the new Age
of Empires, or the hardly-touchable Half Life just because of your petty
problems with the company that makes the system or the game, then you
just don't know gaming, period. And no, I'm not saying that you actually
have to play or love every great game out there, but to ignore or bash
pure genius is fairly short-sighted and foolish. Even sadder is the fact
that you're missing out on the whole point of gaming- to have fun! I
find it hard to believe that arguing on Usenet day after day over which
system is better, the PS or the N64, is any fun at all. Actually, I KNOW
it's not fun. Remember, I was a wee gamer and did all that Usenet stuff
at one point too. Thankfully I turned 12 and grew right out of it.
Granted, the hardcore are pretty intense and passionate about games and
the gaming industry. They may cross the line a few too many times or,
bluntly put, act like pathetic nerds on occasion, but one thing must be
said of them: they know their games. In the scope of the world of gaming
that's really all that matters. A good game is a good game, no matter
how you look at it. It's really just a shame that some of the truly
great games are being missed by those who chose to remain loyal to a
company and its console.

>>>> SNK Pulling Out Of America and Dreamcast
You may have already heard SNK is pulling out of the states, and already
shops around America have been asked to return all unsold NeoGeo Pocket
gear. In fact SNK almost everywhere but in Japan is leaving the gaming
market. The company are going to concentrate on Japan, and expect for
their own systems, only on Playstation 2.
Will Capcom Vs SNK be the last time the SNK characters appear for your
Sega console? Unless the company changes back in the future, the answer
is sadly a yes.

>>>> Colin McRae 2 Driving Onto Your Dreamcast
With just days away till the games release here in New Zealand you can
see this is certainly a highly anticipated game. Now it's been confirmed
a Dreamcast version is on it's way from Infogrames, most recently
publishers of V-Rally 2: Expert Edition. The Colin McCae brand name has
quickly become that of quality these past few years, and that's because
of the simply brilliant gameplay it invites gamers to race in, along
with it's realistic approach. The Dreamcast version is currently slated
for a European release in November.

>>>> Lunar 3 on Dreamcast?
Just the thought of a such a game is enough to get fans of the 2D RPG
series drooling again. Of course the minds behind the Lunar titles is
none other than Gamearts, most recently famous for Grandia II. Well in
the Official Dreamcast Magazine #5 they had an interview with Takeshi
Miyaji (the general manager of Gamearts) about Grandia II. But this is
where the real juicy part is... when asked about a possible 3rd game in
the Lunar series appearing on Dreamcast, mr Miyaji replied, "It is a
rumor... Mmmmm.. A secret. I can't say anything quite yet. I would like
to, but that does not mean it will be released. I mean, I'm not the one
who decides the line-up, but...." True he may not decide the line-up,
but he is the General Manager.
