Sega is gearing up to create some real serious thunder in the video game industry. First of all, he assured those on hand that Sega would not abandon the coin-op industry, but that they would guarantee over thirty new arcade releases over the next year... most of which will be Naomi-based. Their intention is to create a strong synergy between the home and arcade; but not just through quick ports of arcade games. Mr. Okawa went on to explain that the Heat-based network being set up for Dreamcast will also allow DC owners to compete with players in the arcade, over a network supporting 200,000 people simultaneously! Though no time-frame was mentioned for arcade vs. console competition (this will require Sega to migrate toward high-speed connections through their alliance with AT&T and TCI in America), it is a more than tantalizing prospect. He also indicated that as time wears on, more and more Sega arcade games will feature the network option. Not stopping with that revelation, Mr. Okawa pointed out that before Christmas of this year, Sega will be delivering both a microphone and camera for the Dreamcast... which will allow for teleconferencing and video E-Mail! He indicated that players will be able to talk with one another across state lines while seeing the image of their opponent talking back, and hearing their voice! Unbelievable... But perhaps most startling is the fact that Okawa-san plans to change the very name of Sega! He continued by saying that he knew everyone on hand had probably heard negative things about Sega's past, but that these were all mistakes he fully intended to keep in the past, by taking on the leadership role himself and establishing a "New Sega." How, you may ask? By creating a completely new IPO, ushering in Sega's rebirth as 'Sega.com'. It looks like their reasons for putting Sega.com on every advertisement and video they crank out is not merely in advertisement of their website, but also the future name of the company! These are some fairly massive revelations from Sega's distributor conference, and though we were not given any time-frames on any of these announcements, they still mark an enormously bold direction for Sega, and we can't wait to see how all this stuff works out! >>>> Bernie Stolar Leaves SOA Shocking news this week from Sega Of America, Bernie Stolar has left SOA! Toshiro Kezuka has replaced him effective immediately. Later this week it became clear Bernie wasn't fired, but he didn't just decide to leave on his own either. Sources say he was under more and more pressure from SOJ lately, as they looked closely at everything he did. The sources also said he knew about this, and about a possible US$5 million severance package, so was not too worried about being removed from his position. Well it's now official that he got the $5 million, and there's some more related news... Both Working Designs (yes Victor will be very happy now Stolar's gone), and surprisingly EA are talking about DC development. I wonder why EA wasn't happy with Bernie, but this seems to have fixed their problem. - Written by Tails >>>> Quake 3 On Dreamcast From the recent QuakeCon... Things were moving along great between id and Sega before there was a hitch with a mutual NDA agreement that Sega didn't want to sign, and then things got quiet for a while. They've recently started chatting again about a possible Q3:A port to Dreamcast. "Hardware-wise, is't the closest thing to a PC we've got," Carmack explained. They would be able to port basically the entirety of Quake 3 onto the console. Needless to say, the Dreamcast's built-in modem makes this all the more exciting. It may be possible in a Quake 3 port to play against other console-users over the net (it would certainly be silly to port the game over without adding this feature.) "Bringing console gamers on to the Internet is one of the biggest things we need to do," Carmack said. - Written by 3D Action Planet >>>> Olympics Sydney 2000 Revealed An Official Olympics game is nothing new, but of course the Dreamcast version is going to be something else. After seeing the Sega sports range, Olympics Sydney 2000 is going to look awesome! Imagine what they can do with 3 million polygons, a modem, and a VMU... a World Records page online where people can post the best times? Well, at the moment there aren't many details, but Sega 2000 has uncovered a few... (please note none of these have been confirmed yet, as details are scarce) ATD, producers of the Rollcage Playstation game got the official licence. From when they were offering jobs, I noticed there will be Playstation, Nintendo 64, PC, and Dreamcast versions. The Dreamcast version is highly lightly to be a port of the PC game, using Windows CE. They also advertised for a person to work on mini games, so we can except at least one VMU games inside. As development continues, we'll keep you up-dated. - Written by Tails >>>> Sega Crashes Sony's Golf Party Sony Computer Entertainment of America held an executive golf tournament on Monday at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. This event was thrown by key Sony executives including Phil Harrison, vice president of third party relations and research and development for SCEA. In attendance here several Sony third party developers and select members of the media. Also in attendance - albeit uninvited - was Sega of America. Sega crashed Sony's party by having the golf course rigged with several golf balls sporting the Dreamcast logo. In addition, Sega had someone dressed up as Sonic the Hedgehog to parade around the course and parking lot. And if that didn't distract Sony and its third party developers enough, perhapsthe plane flying around all afternoon displaying a "Sega Dreamcast 9-9-99" banner did. - Written by Videogamespot ---------------------------------------------------------- ======[ RED HOT RUMORS ]================================== ---------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each week we'll keep you upto-date with the latest RUMORS going around. If you answered Cool Boarders and 1080 Snowboarding you are correct. Now you have the honor of reading the rest of this preview. If you didn't, well, you should keep reading anyway. Although skiing and snowboarding themed arcade games have been around for years, it wasn't until Uep Systems' Playstation version of Cool Boarders that console gamers were introduced to the world of snow thrashing. While critics and fans had less than enthusiastic reactions to the title, the genre had finally been busted open. But while Uep Systems introduced snowboarding, Nintendo perfected it. With well under a year of development time, the creators of Wave Race, with the help of Shigeru Miyamoto, managed to release a title with tighter control, more impressive physics, and enough gameplay to keep analog sticks furiously rotating long after its release date. And even after two valiant efforts after 1080, the Cool Boarders series never hit the star status its N64 rival did. So today, while Nintendo's EAD team "investigates new hardware," Uep Systems has returned in an effort to give Dreamcast fans the first true snowboarding game for the next generation of consoles. So far, little has been shown, but much has been promised. At this year's E3, Cool Boarders only had two tracks and two characters playable. Don't fret though as there will be a healthy amount of characters, courses, and snowboards, hidden and otherwise, to choose from in the final product. Characters are the typical "thrasher" types with baggy clothing and plenty of "attitude". Courses, though, are much more unique. While the basic idea is still to go from the top of the hill to the bottom, Uep Systems makes sure this isn't such an easy task, even for the most experienced gamers out there. One level has you boarding down a hill almost perpendicular to the ground at blinding fast speeds. This alone may be difficult to navigate, but add obstacles such as sheep, rock clusters, and an entire alpine village and you've got yourself a challenge. Other courses promise to boost the challenge level, not to mention add a bit of graphical flair, with a plethora of obstacles and different scenarios scattered throughout your path to the finish line. Better start practicing now, it might get a little rough. Uep Systems says that the game will contain plenty of modes to keep gamers busy. There will be championship, time attack, half-pipe, and a few others right from the start. Half-pipe alone seems to be the one that keeps players coming back for more, as the constant battle to see who can rack up the most points and perform the greatest tricks is always healthy competition among friends. Gameplay-wise, if you've played a snowboarding game in the past you'll feel right at home here. The analog stick smoothly controls your character, the acceleration button doubles as a jump button for precise jumping, a veering button makes sure you can make those turns and quick actions without wiping out, and a combination of all these buttons allows one to perform special moves. String those special moves together and you'll get some impressive looking and score-inducing combos. Graphically this title is head and shoulders above anything we've seen before in this genre. While the usual techniques such as lens flair and trailing snow particles are all here, these have been severely upgraded and others have been programmed in--- all this thanks to the power of the Dreamcast. Like we're seeing in other DC titles, developers are adding more and more detail to their titles, and Uep Systems is no different. If you think sheep on the course is an interesting sight, just wait until you see some of the other animals and things whiz by you in the middle of a race. The amount of background objects is simply amazing. Not only that, but the graphics are smooth and sharp, animation is silky, and the pop-up is minimal. The amount of draw-in is so small that you'll certainly have no problem seeing where the track is going to change well in advance. Impressive stuff for a first generation title. Right now Uep Systems has shown the public a title that has more than enough potential. While previous Cool Boarder games haven't been all that impressive, the obvious advantages the Dreamcast has over the Playstation have given the series a new hope. --- You can preorder from www.extreme-imports.com for August 26th ---------------------------------------------------------- ======| CHEATS |========================================== ---------------------------------------------------------- >>>> Soul Calibur - Import O Extra Survival Mode: Obtain all pictures in the second collection in the Museum to unlock this mode which allows you to play an alternative type of survival mode. - Submitted by Jesse Hon O Metal Mode: To activate the Metal Mode, first earn the option via Mission Battle, then while selecting any of the characters simply hold R.
