The video game industry has grown exponentially over the since the late '70s, and with that, the games have gotten faster, better looking, and more realistic. All of these changes for the better. Now, with the more realistic graphics, violence has begun to be more and more of a problem with parents, and even the government. Below, a brief history of game violence, and the problems it causes. Every system had violent games with a violent theme to them. From the 2600 to the Dreamcast, game have been violent, and always will be. But, why did nobody ever talk about it until the release of Mortal Kombat on the Genesis? Simple, really. The Genesis was the first system that could display graphics that were capable of showing such violence as Sub Zero ripping Scorpion's head off. Dripping spinal cord and all. This upset people very much. Why would anyone want to view something so violent, let alone interact with it? Also, a crappy, FMV game where mindless girls that ran around in nighties getting massacred caused a bit of unrest. It was called Night Trap. And you had to catch the bad guys. Not even a good game. I'll talk about this more later. Anyway, these were two very violent games, and it was a relatively new type of thing at the time. Next, the big question surfaced. "Could playing violent games make people more violent?" The answer is no, right now. There is no psychological proof that violent games make violent people. True, it can raise aggression, but little else. It can also provide a place to blow off anger. So instead of going off and shooting 5 people in the mall, you can shoot up hundreds of people in Virtua Cop 2, or beat the hell out of guys in Tekken 3, or whatever. Now, mainly because of Nintendo pointing out these two violent tiles (both on the Genesis and Sega CD), the government got involved. They made up this thing called the ESRB, and under the leadership of a lunatic named Jseph Libermann, they proceeded to rate games, a process which still to this day, has literally no effect. I have been buying Mature games since I was 13, never being asked where my parents were, my age, or anything, just "Here's you game." That shows you how well this system works. Store clerks never ask for ID, never ask where your parents are, or anything, hey just make the sale. Movies are better, and on opening night, they ask for ID (most of the time), but it's still not very effective. Ratings do have a good part to them, they can let you gauge how violent a game is, if you can't tell from the cover, of course. If you see a game with stickers on it that say, "Now over 25 ways to maim, slay, and kill! Now with patented Ultra-GoreŽ system, that you can spray blood and limbs all over the room!", then you shouldn't buy it if that game's not for you. Also, they can provide a wall for developers to hide behind, where they can say that their violent game had a rating, and cannot be sued for anything. Honestly, games don't have to be violent to be good. Mario, Sonic, and plenty of other games had hardly a drop of blood in them, and all of them were great. If you don't like violent games, then don't get them, and don't ever feel forced that you have to. There are enough choices out there. ---------------------------------------------------------- ======| IMPORTANT MATTERS |=============================== ---------------------------------------------------------- >>>> Redline Racer - Preorders Now Open Redline Racer will be the next title available for Sega Dreamcast. According to the AP, the lawsuit is a result of a Dec. 1, 1997 shooting when three teenagers were fatally wounded. The lawsuit claims that shooter, Michael Carneal, was provoked by video games, internet pornography, and violent movies. We'll keep an eye on how this one turns out. >>>> Sonic Adventure Remixed Thanks to Katana-edge & Dreamcast.net, we now know who is doing the remixed music for the US version of Sonic Adventure. Chris Vrenna, a percussionist who frequently plays drums with NIN, Trent Reznor, and Mark Blasquez. Vrenna told www.nineinchnails.net/news/ that, "It actually came through my friend and often partner Mark Blasquez. He works on a lot of my stuff." To which Vrenna explains they were given, "a tape of what the original themes sounded like and we did 2 remixes (almost recreations) of those," says Vrenna.
