Using Selfboot to Create a Selfbooting Disc Image
December 30th, 2008
Selfboot was one of the first projects developed by burnerO. Selfboot is a handy little application that automates the process of creating a selfbooting disc image for use on your Dreamcast. Selfboot uses the plain files packages that are available from many Dreamcast-related sites. Selfboot is not compatible with commercial products, and will only successfully create a selfbooting image of packages developed with the free, open-source KallistiOS (KOS) development kit.
To follow this tutorial, you will need the following items:
- Selfboot
- The plain files to a homebrew project
Getting Started
- Download and install Selfboot.
- Download the “Plain Files” package of the project you would like to selfboot.
- Open Selfboot
- If you plan to burn any projects using the built-in burning software (CDRecord), then please click “Yes” when you are asked if you would like to configure CDRecord. You can find more instructions on using CDRecord by checking out our tutorial on “How To Use CDRecord“.
- Locate the directory that contains the plain files you would like to make into a selfbooting image. Press “OK”
- If you would like to use CDRecord to burn your project, select CDRecord from the dialog box at the top. Then, follow the CDRecord tutorial referenced above.
- If you would like to create an NRG image or a CDI image to be burned with Nero, DiscJuggler or Alcohol 120%, then please select DiscJuggler/Nero from the dialog box.
- Type in the name of the disc (standard rules for disc volumes apply: it must be all caps, and it can’t be more than 11 characters)
- Click the appropriate button.
